About Accessibility Helper

Practical accessibility help for people who build and run websites.

Why this site exists

Many people browse with a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification or captions, and many more simply find small, faint text hard to read. Most accessibility problems on the web aren't hard to fix. They're hard to find and easy to misunderstand. Accessibility Helper explains what the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) ask for in plain English, and shows how to meet them in design, content and code.

Who we are

Accessibility Helper is run by CodeInspire, a small software company that builds Shopify apps, including CodeInspire Accessibility Tool. We write the guides we wished we'd had when we started fixing accessibility problems in online stores.

How we write and check our guides

  • Every claim about WCAG links to the W3C's own explanation of that success criterion.
  • Every claim about law links to the law or the regulator. Our legal guides are general information, not legal advice.
  • We don't invent statistics. When we use a number, we cite where it comes from.
  • We never say a tool, widget or checklist makes a site compliant on its own, including our own app.
  • When a guide changes in a meaningful way, we update its "Updated" date.

How the site is paid for

The guides are free and there are no ads. The site is paid for by CodeInspire Accessibility Tool, our Shopify app, which we mention in Shopify-related guides. You never need the app to follow a guide.

Our own accessibility

A site about accessibility has to be accessible. We aim for WCAG 2.2 Level AA; our accessibility statement explains how we test and what we know isn't perfect yet.
